The "pilots out of time" is actually a true thing -- the FAA prohibits pilots from being on duty for more than a certain number of hours. When they reach that limit (not sure what it is, probably 12 or 16 hours), they are required to take an 8-hour break. That's no excuse for the airlines routing you through 3 different flights to get to Kentucky. UGH. Wow, what a nightmare!
